A few kilometres from our seat in Byšice lies the château park at Liblice, with a fen meadow below it. In a small area you can see what interests us most: how water holds a landscape together — and what that does to a person who stops beside it.
The spring
Water flows into a stone basin in the game preserve. Nothing grand — a spring, stone, a few minutes of sound. Yet it is a place where people stop of their own accord, which we think is reason enough to mention it first.
The footage is ours, from 9 April 2024. We removed its audio: the recording sat forty decibels below a usable level, and amplifying it would have raised wind on the microphone rather than water.
The Forest Mind Trail
An interpretive trail, Fenny Meadow Liblice – Château Liblice, runs through the game preserve. It is built around the five senses — sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell — and over less than a kilometre it offers five stations where you are asked to stop and use just one of them. It is a simple and surprisingly effective way to notice what you walk past.
The trail was established by the municipality of Liblice together with the Czech Academy of Sciences and co-financed by the European Union under the Joint Regional Operational Programme.
Listen
The board at the ninth station lists what nests in the preserve: the Black Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker and Common Buzzard, along with small songbirds, leaf warblers, warblers, finches and tits. Among mammals: bats, weasel, pine marten, red squirrel and fox.
You can listen to their voices below. The species are those listed on the board; the recordings come from freely licensed archives — each carries its recordist, source and licence, and the ambiences also their place and date. This is our counterpart to the trail’s Hearing — listen station.
